Sanctions and Sabres

Who?
United States of America

What?
Imposed more economic Sanctions on Iran

Where?
Tehran, Iran

Why is it important, relevant, worth consideration or keeping an eye on?
US sanctions on Iran have been off and on for quite some time. The goal of these sanctions is to curb the Iranian economy enough to force it to stop producing nuclear weaponry. The latest set of sanctions imposed on November 5 targeted the oil, banking and transport industries of the Islamic Republic.
Iran is no stranger to circumventing sanctions however. The Deputy Commander of Iran’s Republican Guard said this week that the country would continue to flourish under the sanctions. Previously both China and India have aided Iran in circumventing US sanctions.
Interestingly the EU is opposed to the US sanctions according to a statement by European Economic Affairs Commissioner Pierre Moscovici. It remains to be seen if the EU will find a way to circumvent the sanctions without inciting the ire of the United States.
Whether or not Iran will continue to flourish remains to be seen. A further aspect worth considering is what effect the sanctions will have on Iran’s northern neighbors/ Trading partners in the Caucasus.

Who?
Al-Shabab

What?
Three bombs killing over 50 people

Where?
Mogadishu, Somalia

Why is it important, relevant, worth consideration or keeping an eye on?

The Jihadist group fights to overthrow the current government of Somalia. The group was forced out of Mogadishu in 2011 by Somali and multinational African Union Forces. However they still retain a strong presence in the countryside, and continue to strike at Government and military positions and installations with impunity.
Somalia has been ravaged by conflict since the early 1990s after the regime of Siad Barre was toppled in 1991.

People’s Breakaway Republics

Who?
Citizenry of Donetsk and Luhansk

What?
Leadership Election

Where?
Donetsk and Luhansk, People’s Republics of Donetsk and Luhansk, East Ukraine

Why is it important, relevant, worth consideration or keeping an eye on?
The conflict in East Ukraine’s breakaway republics has faded from much of public interest and consciousness. The ongoing conflict there has claimed over 10,000 lives since its begin in 2014.
At the end of August, the leader of the PR of Donetsk, Alexander Zakharchenko was assassinated by an explosion in a café in downtown Donetsk. The man expected to fill his position is Denis Pushilin, known for being involved in a high level Ponzi scheme.
In Luhansk, Leonid Pasechnik is expected to win out. Pasechnik has stood at the head of the security forces of Luhansk since 2014.
The UN and European External Action Service have both issued statements declaring the elections to be fraudulent and in violation of the 2015 Minsk agreements.
Although the results will not be recognized by the west, it will be interesteing to see if the change in leadership brings any change to the region, or if instability remains the standard fare.
